The
A.R. Smith Scholarships in Chemistry are available to undergraduate chemistry
majors at Appalachian State University. The Scholarships are awarded to
those students who are declared chemistry majors and who have demonstrated
academic excellence at Appalachian State University. Special
consideration will be given to those students who are actively engaged in
research with a chemistry department faculty member.
Applicants
must submit a typed, one-page statement describing career plans and goals or alternatively,
a summary of research participation. State also: your seminar attendance
and your participation in departmental activities (including research and
representation). A personal
interview may be scheduled as the Scholarship Committee deems necessary.
Recipients of these awards must have and maintain a minimum grade point average
of 2.60 in chemistry and must maintain satisfactory progress toward the degree
in chemistry. The Scholarship Committee will also consider the student's
overall performance when making its recommendations.
Students
must apply for the A.R. Smith Scholarship each semester. Awards are based on: available funds,
chemistry class status, G.P.A., seminar attendance, research, participation in
departmental activities, and effective representation of the A. R. Smith
Department of Chemistry on campus as well as in the chemistry community.
